HICKORY 276

Hickory NC (March 19, 1972)
276 laps on 0.363 mile paved oval; 100.188 miles

HICKORY, N. C. ( A P) - Bobby Allison's experiment with the 366 cubic inch engine in his Junior Johnson Chevrolet paid off Sunday, and the shorter tracks of the Grand National East circuit are likely to see move of the smaller power plant in the f u t u r e. After Allison had driven the Chevy to its first victory of the season in the Hickory 276,chief mechanic Herb Nab said the Johnson team was pleased with the results, which were worth  $1,000.

Allison's victory didn't come easily. He started on the pole but relinquished the lead to Bobby Isaac, driving a Dodge. Isaac fell back on the 153rd lap w h en he pitted under a green flag and eventually finished a lap behind on the .308 mile oval. Third place in the 100-mile chase between the bigger Grand National cars and the smaller machines of what used to be the Grand American circuit went to Dave Marcis, in a Dodge.
