Columbia 200

Columbia SC (April 4, 1972) 200 laps on 0.510 mile paved oval; 102 miles

COLUMBIA S.C. (NASCAR) April 4, 1972 - Max Berrier overhauled Neil Castles 37 laps from the finish and coasted to victory in the Columbia 200 at New Columbia Speedway.  Berrier, a veteran of Modified and Grand American racing, drove a Mustang to the first Grand National East win of his career.  At the finish he was a quarter of a lap ahead of Castles, who three days previous won the first race of his career.

Elmo Langley of Charlotte and driving a Ford was a half lap back in the third spot.  Fourth was Wayne Andrews who was lapped just two laps from the finish.  Castles and Langley traded the lead the first 163 laps of the race before yielding to Berrier.  Tiny Lund started from the pole position after qualifying Walter Ballard's Mercury.  However, the car dropped from the race when the oil pressure went down.
