CASTLES WINS POINTS TITLE - FORCED TO APOLOGIZE

COEBURN, VA (UPI) - Neil Castles was only number two Sunday but he came away with the big prize. Castles, of Charlotte, drove his Plymouth to a second place finish behind Bobby Isaac at the Coalminers 100 NASCAR Grand National East stock car race, and edged Elmo Langley for the $10,000 Grand National East points championship. Langley finished third in the race, but was 6.25 points short of Castles when the final tally was completed.

Castles was only 3.75 points ahead of Langley going into the race, after a 10th place finish Saturday night at Winston-Salem.N.C., Langley finished fourth.  Castles, a stocky racing veteran, would not have been permitted to run in Saturday's race had he not apologized to a Winston-Salem newspaper writer, whom he struck during an argument last month.  Bowman-Gray Stadium manager Joe Hawkins telegrammed the ultimate to Castles Friday night, saying he would not be allowed to race unless he apologized to Russ DeVault.  Castles apologized, ran in the race, and stayed alive for the points championship.

Isaac, of Catawba N.C., cruised to an easy five-lap win, averaging 60.404 m.p.h. in the Coalminers, a track record.  Only nine of the 31 starters finished Sunday's race, watched by 8,000 spectators at the new Lonesome Pines Speedway. Isaac, driving a 1970 Dodge, finished five laps ahead of second-place finisher Neil Castles.
